YLF: 056 Chat with Ben
Where’s the best place for listeners to connect with you?: https://www.instagram.com/ben.jitsu/
What’s one habit you do almost daily?: Listing/planning/prioritizing.
What’s one of your normal routines?: Taking some time to plan - time on Sunday to plan overall for the week, and time each day to plan details for the next day or two.
How long did it take for the above routine to stick? : Lists and planning have always been a part of who I am. I just needed to learn to apply that same process to different aspects of my life.
So... it took both no time at all and a lifetime to stick as it is part of who I am.
As it relates to weight loss, fitness, and health... that took a few months of practice to get to a workable place, and I've been continuously improving upon it ever since.
Describe your weight loss journey.: Ages 0-24 were spent overweight, husky, fat, obese.
At 24 I had a few moments line up that made me feel the pressure to finally change. I was 333 pounds at this point.
I lost 124 pounds in about a year.
Then went through a rough period in my life. Mental health things, existential crisis type stuff.
Ended up gaining back 80 pounds in 6 months.
Got through some of my issues and was able to refocus on losing weight the RIGHT way this time.
Lost 111 pounds in 18 months and got to my lowest of 178
That's where jiu-jitsu comes in, my brand, my purpose, and all the things I'm focused on now.
This is where my story truly begins in my eyes. The story of who I'm becoming.
Worth mentioning... I've since put back on about 15 pounds, but in a MUCH better way via strength training, athletics, and general body recomposition.
What’s a skill you developed as a result of working through your weight loss journey?: introspective thinking and self awareness
What has that skill led to outside of weight loss?: Finding out what I truly want from life, situations, etc. as well as finding the person I truly am / want to be.
What have you learned about yourself over the last year or so?: That I often get in my own way and hold myself back. In both little ways and big ones. Call it self sabotage to some degree.
What advice would you give to someone working through their weight loss journey?: One. Day. At. A. Time.
Don't get overwhelmed looking at or thinking about how far you have to go. Take it one meal, one workout, one decision at a time.
Also... support systems and accountability can go a LONG way.
What resources would you recommend listeners check out?: My podcast... lol... but for real. The "What Now? Podcast" - https://benjitsu.online/podcast
For general fitness and nutrition content that's not boring af, my favorite resource is Mark Bell as well as his podcast, "Mark Bell's Power Project"
I have to admit that while I'm FAR away from the diet and lifestyle I began with... I DO credit Mark Sisson's book/idea of the PRIMAL BLUEPRINT with being the thing that saved / changed my life when it came to food, fitness, and lifestyle habits in general.
What are you working on now?: Building my brand and becoming a legitimate jiu-jitsu athlete.
Is there anywhere else you’d like to point listeners to? Please provide link if possible: Is it wrong to send them to my stuff? LOL.
There's so much out there, and just like diet... what works for me may not work for the listeners.
