Getting Past Your Ego

Hey there. We all have an ego. It’s that voice in our head that places us at the center of every story, convincing us that we’re right, that we’re justified, and that the world should bend in our favor. And while having an ego is natural, letting it control our perspective can keep us stuck, repeating patterns, avoiding accountability, and blaming external circumstances for where we are in life.

The first step in moving past this? Recognizing that our ego is there. It doesn’t mean we’re bad people or that we only look out for ourselves, but acknowledging its presence gives us the power to question it. When we can step outside of our own perspective, we can start identifying blind spots, the things our ego shields us from seeing.

How Ego Holds Us Back

One of the biggest ways our ego traps us is by shifting responsibility away from us. We might focus on what’s out of our control and blame external circumstances for our situation. “If only this were different,” “If only that person had acted differently,” “If only I had a better opportunity.” The truth? That mindset keeps us stuck.

Yes, things happen outside of our control. But the moment we accept that our lives are our responsibility, regardless of past circumstances, we regain control. When we stop waiting for external factors to change and take ownership, we start moving forward.

Another way ego keeps us stuck? Reinforcing the same beliefs over and over. Social media makes this easier than ever. We scroll, we see people who think like us, and we reaffirm our opinions. But deep down, when we’re truly connected with ourselves, we know what’s real. We know when something isn’t working, even if our ego is trying to convince us otherwise.

Peeling Back the Layers

The ego acts as a layer of armor, protecting the most vulnerable parts of us—the part that’s been hurt, rejected, or let down. But growth happens beneath the ego. The more we question it, the more we start seeing our true selves, the part that’s open, sensitive, and willing to grow.

We all want to feel right, but at what cost? Are we holding onto beliefs that no longer serve us? Are we seeking validation from others because we don’t trust our own thoughts? True self-trust comes from doing the work internally, not from finding people who agree with us.

At the end of the day, our ego isn’t the enemy, it’s just not meant to be in the driver’s seat. The more we recognize it, question it, and peel back the layers, the closer we get to living authentically.
