Managing Stress Before It Manages You

Hey there. Stress is a part of life. It’s something we all deal with, but if we aren’t careful, it can start to control us instead of the other way around. I’ve been thinking a lot about how we manage daily stress and how the way we handle it can either help us grow or completely overwhelm us. The key is recognizing what triggers our stress and then figuring out how to regain control.

One of the first steps is simply observing. No judgment, no overanalyzing, just noticing what sets us off. Some stressors are minor and barely affect us, while others hit hard and make everything feel overwhelming. If we can pinpoint those triggers, we can start making small adjustments. Sometimes, just shifting our perspective can make a huge difference. When we feel out of control, the goal is to create a sense of balance, even in small ways.

A big part of stress management is taking care of yourself consistently. That means moving your body, eating in a way that supports you, and finding time to disconnect. But beyond that, are there activities that bring you joy? Something that isn’t necessarily a creative pursuit but is something you genuinely enjoy. Those little moments matter.

Time management is another huge factor. It’s easy to feel like we’re constantly running from one thing to the next with no time to breathe. If that’s the case, where can you add in even small breaks? Maybe it’s just five or ten minutes between meetings or responsibilities. Maybe it’s learning to say no more often. Setting boundaries is talked about a lot, but actually doing it can feel uncomfortable at first. Start small. Say no once, and over time, it gets easier.

Another thing that has helped me is practicing mindfulness. Staying present isn’t always easy, but there are simple techniques that help. One of my favorites is box breathing. Four seconds in, four seconds out, repeat. It’s a quick way to reset. Another is a head-to-toe scan, checking in with myself physically and emotionally. Sometimes, just acknowledging what I’m feeling makes a difference.

Lastly, having supportive relationships is huge. You don’t need a big circle, but having at least one person who doesn’t drain you can make all the difference. The more you prioritize your well-being, the easier it becomes to manage stress and have the tough conversations when needed.

Managing stress isn’t about getting rid of it completely. It’s about learning how to handle it in a way that works for you. Give yourself grace, experiment with different strategies, and know that it’s a process. The more you practice, the better you’ll get at it.
