Hey there. Let’s talk about carbs. Not the villainized version you see in every trendy diet headline, but the real, everyday carbs that are part of a balanced, realistic way of eating.
If you’ve been trying keto or low carb and keep finding yourself face-first in a bag of chips or halfway through a box of crackers, you’re not alone. I’ve seen it happen over and over again, and I’ve experienced it myself. That “cheating” feeling when you eat something your plan told you to avoid? It’s time to let that go.
There’s no cheating when you’re building a way of eating around your preferences. The real issue isn’t carbs. It’s restriction and the mindset that comes with it.
The cool thing is you can create your own low-carb plan without completely cutting carbs. Potatoes, rice, oats, fruit… all of these can fit into your daily meals if you portion them properly. Use a quarter cup for rice or pasta. Cut the potato in half. Stick with one tortilla instead of two. These small adjustments add up.
If you’ve gone super low carb, just adding back in 100 to 125 grams a day might feel like you’re cheating, but you’re not. In fact, that range still qualifies as low carb. And it’s far more sustainable than white-knuckling your way through strict keto rules.
You don’t live in a lab. You’re not a machine. Your food choices aren’t made in a vacuum. There’s no perfect plan. There’s only what works for you consistently.
I’ve been around the weight loss community for over 20 years. I remember when six meals a day was the gold standard. Now it’s fasting and ultra-low carb. Eventually, the trends swing back around. So instead of chasing what’s hot, build something that fits your life.
Your goal isn’t to be perfect. Your goal is to be consistent. Find a balance of protein, fat, and carbs that keeps you satisfied and allows you to stick with it. My go-to split is 40 percent fat, 30 to 35 percent protein, and 25 to 30 percent carbs. Play with the numbers. Track them. See how your body responds.
And please... stop beating yourself up over a few extra grams of carbs. A cookie or a tortilla won’t undo your progress. Lack of consistency will.
