When Losing Weight Creates Different Insecurities

Losing weight changes your body. It does not automatically change the way you see yourself. You may even reach a weight you remember from ten or 20 years ago and discover that the reflection does not look the way you imagined it would. Your body has lived during those years too, and the insecurities you carried may have gone much deeper than the number on the scale.

Take a Break From Constantly Judging Your Body

What if you went through today without deciding whether you liked your body? You did not have to convince yourself that you looked amazing. You did not have to pick yourself apart either. You simply let your body exist without constantly measuring, evaluating, or forming an opinion about it. If you are used to being highly critical of yourself, even considering that possibility may feel unusual.

I think taking a break from body evaluation can be a powerful first step.

Constantly Monitoring Your Body Can Make You Feel Judged

If you have ever walked into a room and immediately felt like people were looking at your body, sizing you up, comparing you, or noticing the exact thing you feel insecure about, you are not alone. That feeling can be incredibly convincing. It can shape how you dress, how you move, where you stand, whether you participate, and even how much of yourself you allow other people to see. But I think there is an important question underneath all of that. How much of what you assume other people are thinking is connected to the way you are already looking at yourself?

When we spend a lot of time evaluating our own body, it can become easy to assume everyone else is doing the same thing.

Sometimes feeling watched starts with how closely we are already watching ourselves.

Maybe You Miss Who You Were, Not Just How You Looked

I think you can miss your old body without actually wanting it back.

But I also think this question runs much deeper than appearance.

You may look at an old photo and think about your weight, your shape, how athletic you were, or how differently your clothes fit.

Those things can absolutely be what you miss.

There is nothing wrong with saying that.

But sometimes when we say, “I miss my old body,” what we are really saying is:

I miss something about who I was during that stage of my life.

How to Be Less Critical When You Look in the Mirror

There is a difference between looking at yourself in the mirror and monitoring yourself.

When I say monitoring, I mean scanning.

Checking.

Fixating.

Looking for the same areas you tend to criticize.

Maybe you stand in front of the mirror and immediately start searching for something you do not like.

Maybe you look at one part of your body, have a negative thought about it, and suddenly that thought becomes much bigger.

I do not like how this part of my body looks.

Can quickly become:

I do not like myself.

That is why I think it is worth asking what you are actually doing when you look in the mirror.

How Social Media Can Change the Way You See Yourself

Is Social Media Making You See Yourself Through Other People’s Eyes? I do not think we are literally seeing ourselves through other people’s eyes. We cannot.

We do not actually know what another person is thinking when they look at us.

What I think happens is more complicated.

We see ourselves through our perception of what we think other people see.

And social media can amplify that dramatically.

We see what gets likes.

What gets comments.

What gets shared.

What body types are trending.

What styles are getting attention.

What somebody else posts.

What performs well when we post.

Then we start telling ourselves a story about what all of that means.

When a Compliment Challenges the Story You Tell About Yourself

A compliment sounds like it should be easy to receive.

Someone says something nice about you.

You say thank you.

Everybody moves on.

But for a lot of people, it does not feel that simple.

Sometimes a compliment creates an immediate feeling of discomfort. You might want to brush it off. You might minimize what the person said. You might assume they are only being nice. You might even feel a little exposed.

I think one reason for that is pretty straightforward.

You Can Have Body Goals Without Constantly Evaluating Yourself

I can remember one of the first times I became very aware of my body.

I was eight years old.

At the elementary school I attended in the eighties, they weighed students individually and called the number out in front of the class.

I was around eighty pounds.

A lot of the other kids were forty or fifty pounds, some even lighter. The way I remember the moment, there was an audible reaction when my number was called.

And I remember thinking something along the lines of, maybe I am not supposed to weigh this much.

That memory has stayed with me.

I do not think one classroom experience created everything I would ever think or feel about my body. It was one layer.

But that is kind of the point.

Most of us probably did not wake up one morning and decide that our body needed to be evaluated constantly.

It happened gradually.

When the Weight Loss Goal Is Really an Emotional Goal

Why do you want to change your body?

I think that may be one of the most important questions you can ask yourself during a fitness or weight loss journey.

You may want to improve your health. You may want to lose weight, become stronger, change your body composition, move better, or simply like the way you look in certain clothes.

There is nothing inherently wrong with any of that.

But there may also be another expectation sitting underneath those goals.

Self Trust Shapes the Person You Become

We carry around a lot of different versions of ourselves. There is the version shaped by other people's expectations, the version influenced by insecurity, the version connected to what we have accomplished, the version we remember from the past, and the version we imagine becoming in the future. All of those perspectives can pull at us at the same time. That can make a simple question like, “Who am I?” much harder to answer than it initially sounds.

How to Stop a Body Image Thought Spiral

Judging your body can happen so quickly that you may not even realize you are doing it. You look in the mirror, notice something you do not like, and within seconds that one observation has turned into several thoughts about your appearance, yourself, and maybe even your entire history with your body. For many people, this has happened so consistently for so long that the process feels automatic. You may not catch it at the first thought. You may be seven, nineteen, or forty nine thoughts into the conversation before you realize what is happening.

How to Start Building a Better Relationship With Your Reflection

Body appreciation is something you can practice.

Eventually, that practice can begin showing up in a lot of different areas of your life. But I think the best place to start is incredibly simple.

Stand in front of a mirror for 60 seconds and intentionally build yourself up.

Before you do that, though, I think you have to make a choice.

You have to decide that you want to change the way you see yourself. You may even need to declare it out loud.

I am going to work on appreciating who and what I see in the mirror.

Here is where it gets difficult.

Body Image vs Body Positivity

The conversation around body positivity has become more divided than it was ever meant to be.

When I think about what body positivity originally represented, I believe it was about having a positive outlook on the body you have while moving through the different stages of life. It wasn't about ignoring your health or pretending you never wanted to improve. It was about approaching yourself with compassion as you took care of yourself.

Body Image vs Body Appreciation

Body image and body appreciation are connected, but they aren't the same thing.

Body image is how we feel about who and what we see in the mirror. Body appreciation goes a step further. It's choosing to appreciate not only how your body looks, but what it can do, where it's brought you, and how remarkable it really is.

That appreciation doesn't happen because your body reaches a certain size or shape.

The Difference Between Body Image and Body Confidence

Body image and body confidence are closely connected, but they aren't the same thing.

Body image is how we feel about what we see in the mirror. Body confidence goes deeper. It's about being at ease with who you are. It's quiet, self-assured, and doesn't require you to prove anything to anyone.

The Difference Between Body Image and Self Esteem

Body image and self-esteem are connected, but they aren't the same thing.

Body image is how we feel about what we see in the mirror. Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves as a person, how much we trust ourselves, how capable we believe we are, and the story we tell ourselves about who we are. I believe our self-esteem drives our body image.

Why Does Body Image Change Over Time?

I think one of the biggest reasons body image changes over time is because life changes over time.

Different experiences affect each of us in different ways, and what impacts one person may not impact another. That's why it's so important to stay connected to who you actually are instead of who you think you should be or who you believe other people want you to be.
