When Self Improvement Starts Feeling Like Self Rejection
There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve your body.
You can want to become stronger, change your appearance, improve your fitness, or see what you are capable of. I actually hope people continue to have goals and ambitions throughout their lives.
The question I keep coming back to is what is driving the improvement?
There is a difference between moving toward something because you appreciate yourself and want to keep evolving, and constantly working on yourself because somewhere underneath it all, you still do not believe you are enough.
You may not be able to tell the difference by looking at the goal. Two people can be pursuing the exact same outcome from completely different places.
I think the difference often shows up in how it feels to live inside your own head.
Are you generally at ease with yourself while you pursue the goal? Can you appreciate who and what you see today while still wanting more? Or does every goal feel connected to finally becoming somebody you can accept?
The e-book keeps coming back to this same tension. Appreciating your body does not prevent you from wanting change. The concern is when you expect the physical change to finally make you feel okay about who you are.
Maybe the question is not whether your body needs improving.
Maybe it is whether you believe improvement is required before you are allowed to appreciate it.
