When Self Observation Becomes a Useful Skill

I think we should be present in our own lives. I also think there are moments when figuratively stepping outside ourselves can be incredibly useful.

You know the feeling when the thought loop starts. The emotions get louder. You begin replaying the same thing. Maybe you are criticizing your body, second guessing a decision or trying to solve something you have already thought about 15 times.

Sometimes it helps to watch.

What am I doing right now?

What am I thinking?

What would I tell someone else if I watched them doing the same thing?

Observation can create enough distance to give you another choice.

But even observation has a limit. If you realize you are now analyzing the analysis, take a break. Go look through your collection. Write something. Paint. Watch television. Touch something real. Do something you enjoy that has absolutely nothing to do with improving yourself.

You do not have to solve every thought loop. Sometimes you just need to leave it alone long enough to go live your life.
