Why I Stopped Making Fat Jokes About Myself

Hey there. I know fat jokes can seem harmless. You hear people say them all the time, especially during the holidays. Maybe you’ve even made a few about yourself. I used to do that too. You brush it off with a laugh and think it’s not a big deal. But I’m here to tell you, it is.

If you’re serious about long-term success with weight loss and developing a healthier lifestyle, mindset matters. Your mindset is everything. And when you joke about your body in a negative way, even if it feels small or lighthearted, you’re planting a seed of doubt. You’re reinforcing insecurity. And whether you realize it or not, that impacts how you feel about yourself and how consistent you are with your efforts.

Most people I talk to who are trying to lose weight have carried that struggle for years. It’s not funny to them. It’s something that sits in the back of their mind way more than they’d like to admit. So if it’s something you’re genuinely insecure about, stop making it the punchline.

I’m not saying you can’t have a sense of humor. I’m saying there’s a difference between being funny and putting yourself down to get a laugh. You deserve better than that. You deserve to speak about yourself with the same kindness and respect you’d give anyone else.

One of the biggest indicators of long-term success is how you talk to yourself. And that includes the jokes. When you stop making fat jokes about yourself and start saying things like “I’m working on it” or “I’m building a lifestyle I enjoy,” everything shifts. You’re no longer tearing yourself down. You’re building yourself up. And that makes all the difference.

This doesn’t mean you have to be positive all the time. But it does mean being intentional with your words. If you wouldn’t say it to someone else, don’t say it to yourself. Especially not as a joke.

You are where you are right now. That doesn’t mean you’re staying there. You’re doing the work. You’re figuring things out. That matters more than any quick laugh ever will.
