Hey there. There are times in life when everything feels like it’s going smoothly, and there are times when it all goes sideways. If you’ve been on a weight loss or fitness journey for a while, you know exactly what I mean. There are days when you’re just not feeling it, and sometimes those days turn into weeks, months, or even longer.
The first thing I remind myself, and anyone I work with, is that this is a lifelong process. Over time you’ll have dips in motivation and in follow-through. Those dips don’t define you. Whether you’ve been away from your eating and exercise habits for a few weeks or for years, you can always come back. When you’re ready, you’ll start again. And when that time comes, your first step will probably be much smaller than you expect.
That’s the key. You don’t have to take seven steps at once. You just take one. Then the next one. And over time momentum starts to build. It won’t be perfectly linear, and there will be ups and downs along the way. A lot of the challenge is in your head, which is why cultivating a calm mind and a deliberate approach is so important. When you have that, you can navigate the rough patches without spiraling.
Some days your plan might get completely thrown off. You might still be able to do everything you set out to do, or you might need to adjust. It’s like being the quarterback who sees the defense shift and calls a new play at the line. You make the change based on what’s in front of you, not what you hoped would happen.
And here’s something I think we need to talk about more. There’s a difference between “I just don’t feel like it today” and “Life is swallowing me whole right now.” In the second situation, the best thing you can do might be to step away for a day, a week, or even a month. That’s not quitting. That’s taking care of yourself.
The mental tug of war, telling yourself you should be doing something while also not wanting to do it can be exhausting. If you need time away, take it. Your journey will be here when you get back, especially if you’ve built it around your preferences.
This is why I believe so strongly in the inside/out approach. You’re not chasing someone else’s ideal. You’re building a process that supports who you are and how you want to live. That’s what makes it sustainable for the long term.
