When the Day Doesn’t Go As Planned

Hey there. Let’s be honest. Your day is not always going to go according to plan. You can prep your meals, schedule your workouts, and still... life shows up with something different. That’s where one of the most valuable skills in fitness and weight loss comes in. The ability to adjust.

Today was one of those days for me. I usually work out first thing in the morning, but I had something else to take care of. I could have thrown in the towel and said I’d just try again tomorrow. But instead, I stopped, looked at what I could do, and made a new plan. That’s it. That’s the skill. Adjust and move forward.

When you build this into your process, you take pressure off yourself. You stop beating yourself up because something came up. You stop labeling the day as a failure. You just shift your approach and keep going.

This is why I always emphasize minimum daily actions. They give you flexibility. My minimum for movement is 30 minutes. Today I ended up with exactly 30 minutes between cardio and stretching. I didn’t get to do my full plan, but I still got it done. And even if I had only done 20 minutes, that would still be a win. The real win is not skipping it altogether.

Most diet plans want you to live in a lab. Everything measured. Everything scheduled. But we don’t live in labs. We live in the real world. With jobs and families and last-minute surprises. You need structure, but you also need to know when and how to bend it.

This is the path to a maintenance mindset. Where you’re consistent, not perfect. Where fitness fits into your life, not the other way around. When you can look at the day, see what’s working and what’s not, and pivot without guilt... that’s when you win long term.

So here’s my challenge to you. Purposely put yourself in a situation where you have to adjust. Or, when life throws something your way, lean into the challenge. Don’t beat yourself up. Just step back, think, adjust, and move forward.
