The Truth About the Word “Nutritionist”

Hey there. anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. It’s one of those self-appointed titles, like “expert” or “guru.” And that’s exactly why it frustrates me. Many people assume nutritionist and dietitian are the same thing, but they’re not even close.

A registered dietitian (RD) is a credentialed professional who has completed a degree program, taken advanced coursework, and passed an exam. It’s a regulated title, meaning you can’t just wake up one morning and decide to be a dietitian. But with nutritionist, there’s no official regulation—anyone can use the title, regardless of education or qualifications.

Be Careful Who You Trust

I see people slap "nutritionist" in their bio and suddenly start selling plans and giving advice as if they’ve spent years studying the science behind food and human metabolism. Some may have certifications, but even those vary widely in depth and credibility.

If you ever come across someone calling themselves a nutritionist, ask them:
What did your certification involve?
How long did it take you to earn it?
What kind of formal education do you have in nutrition?

It’s not to discredit every single person using the title. Some might have useful knowledge. But without proper training, they might be giving misleading or even harmful advice.

Who Should You Listen To?

When it comes to your nutrition, I’ll always say this—talk to your doctor. Tell them that some person on the internet is suggesting you center your diet around:
✔️ More produce
✔️ Leaner sources of protein (if you eat meat)
✔️ Regular movement

See what they say. If your doctor is on board, great. If they have concerns, follow their guidance over any online influencer or self-proclaimed nutritionist.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, nutrition is personal. What works for one person may not work for another. But if you’re taking advice, make sure it’s from qualified professionals who have the education and experience to back it up.
