Take the Emotion Out of Weight Loss

Hey there. One of the most powerful things I’ve added into my own process and the work I do with others is setting yes or no goals. When you’re on a weight loss journey, you can spend a lot of time in your head. You start questioning how well you’re doing. You start picking apart all the things you think you should be doing better. Before long, you convince yourself that you’re failing when you’re really just stuck in your own thoughts.

That’s where yes or no goals come in. These are simple, specific goals that can be answered with one word. Did I do this or not? Yes or no. That’s it.

This idea comes from my time studying with Precision Nutrition. While I’m not an employee of theirs, I do use some of their coaching tools, and this one in particular has stuck with me. I use it with my clients, and I use it for myself.

Start by creating a minimum daily action. For example, get at least 30 minutes of activity each day. At the end of the day, you can ask yourself, did I do that? Yes or no. Then you tie that into a weekly goal. Let’s say your weekly goal is to hit that daily action at least four times a week. By the end of the week, you’ll know exactly how you did.

This helps take the emotion out of the process. Weight loss is emotional, we know that. But having something to come back to that’s clear and simple can keep you grounded.

What’s really cool is that this approach works with everything. Your workouts, your meals, your sleep, your stress. You can create simple goals around any of it.

And here’s something to keep in mind. Set your goals slightly below what you’re already doing so you can exceed them. If you’re already working out five days a week for 45 minutes, then set a goal of 30 minutes four times a week. When you exceed it, you’ll build confidence and momentum.

This isn’t just a journey. This is your highway. It may have some slowdowns along the way, but it’s a direct route when you set these actions and goals.
