Hey there. If you’ve ever thought about becoming a fitness coach, I want you to know you’re probably much closer to that goal than you think. The biggest thing you need to get started is your story. And if you’re active in the fitness space in any way, whether you’re maintaining your progress or still working toward your goals, you already have one. You’re sharing that story every day through your Instagram posts, your food logs, your fitness trackers, or conversations in online communities.
But beyond just having a story, what helps you stand out is being relatable and consistent. You don’t have to be completely unique. You just need to speak directly to the people who are going through what you’ve experienced. That is where you’ll build connection, which is really the foundation of good coaching.
You don’t need to hit a goal weight. You don’t need to have a certain body composition. In fact, many people are already looking at your current “starting point” as their goal. What matters is that you’re building the habits, showing up, and living the process. You are walking proof of what it means to do the work, and that’s powerful.
The next step is deciding what kind of coach you want to be. You can be a process coach or a product coach. A product coach ties their coaching model to a brand like Beachbody or Herbalife. That works for some, especially if your goal is to get started quickly with a recognized brand. But it limits you to that product and creates a perception that can be tough to manage.
Personally, I’ve leaned toward being a process coach. I’ve spent years building my own brand and creating content that focuses on what people are doing right. It takes time. It takes one-on-one conversations. And it takes consistency. But if you want to build something that’s truly yours, that’s the path I recommend.
If you're thinking about becoming a coach, start by sharing your story. Keep showing up. Keep being honest about your process. That is what will connect you with the people who need to hear from you.
