Hey there. When it comes to building an active lifestyle, I believe in starting with what you're willing and able to do right now. That’s where the “Your Name” Exercise Program comes in. Just like with the eating plan I talked about in the last episode, this is about your preferences, your ability, and your lifestyle.
The truth is, you don’t need to force yourself into activities you hate. If there are forms of exercise that you already enjoy, start there. If you’re not sure what you like, try a few things and see what sticks. Movement is not a punishment. It’s a chance to connect with your body in a way that supports your health and your mindset.
My own journey with fitness started when I was a kid. I have cerebral palsy, and when I was younger I worked with a number of physical therapists and orthopedics. One of them introduced me to weightlifting as part of my therapy. Because of how it was presented, I actually enjoyed it. And I stuck with it. Strength training became a part of my foundation.
Cardio was more of a mixed bag. There were machines I didn’t like, some I grew to enjoy, and others that took a toll on my body over time. For example, I loved the stair climber for a while, but it eventually became too much on my joints. So now I walk. It’s simple and effective, and it meets me where I am.
Stretching has also become part of my regular routine again. I started doing it consistently after Heather encouraged me. I had done it a lot when I was younger, and it’s been nice to bring it back as an adult. Every piece of this program builds on what I enjoy and what works for me right now.
This is how I want you to look at your own movement. Whether you’re exercising in bed, on the floor, at home, or at a gym, it’s all valid. You start where you are. You do what you can. And you build from there. Some activities will come and go as your life changes. That’s totally fine.
The most important part is to build consistency around activities you enjoy. That’s how you stick with it. That’s how you build from the inside/out.
If you’re ready to start designing your own fitness plan around what works for you, join one of the YLF programs and let’s get started together.
