Fitness as a Set of Skills

Hey there. One of the most important shifts I’ve made in my fitness journey is realizing that everything I’m doing right now is part of an evolving process. The way I eat and exercise today will absolutely look different a year from now. But that doesn’t mean the work I’m doing now isn’t valuable. It just becomes another tool in my toolbox.

I used to think that following one specific plan was the only way to be successful. Whether it was keto, Weight Watchers, Whole30 or something else, I thought I had to pick one and stick with it no matter what. But the truth is, these plans are just strategies. They’re tools. And different tools work best in different situations.

When I travel, I eat very low carb. Not because I’m doing keto, but because options are limited. Almonds, dark chocolate, coffee with half and half, meat and veggies at restaurants... it’s about practicality. Other times, I’m eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches made with high-fiber bread. It’s affordable, filling, and packed with more fiber and less sugar than most granola bars.

What I’ve learned is that every plan has something useful to offer. Whole30 helps you focus on whole foods. Weight Watchers encourages fruits, veggies, and lean protein. Keto emphasizes cutting processed sugar. Strip these down to the basics and you’re left with skills you can use in any situation.

The same goes for workouts. Maybe you started with Zumba, then tried yoga or strength training because you enjoyed the community at your gym. That’s how it should be. You’re building skills that give you flexibility and confidence.

When you see health and fitness this way, you stop feeling like you’re failing when something doesn’t go perfectly. You start looking at what’s working. What you’ve built. What you’re learning. You stop chasing perfection and start seeing real progress.

This is what we’re doing in the YLF Experience. We build skills, not rigid routines. We focus on what’s working for us now while giving ourselves room to grow into what comes next. If that sounds like what you need, come join us.
