Hey there. One of the most powerful skills you can develop when it comes to weight loss and fitness is the ability to adapt your plan when life gets messy. We can all follow a routine when everything is going smoothly, but what happens when your day completely goes off the rails?
Here’s the thing... having structure is great. But rigid, “do it this exact way or else” plans usually fall apart when life throws you curveballs. That’s why I always encourage people to build their own flexible plan instead of copying someone else’s template. If you create something that fits into your life, you can adjust it when you need to and still keep moving forward.
I like to plan each day the night before or the morning of. It’s simple. I ask myself, what do I have going on today? What will make it easier to stick to the basics? That might mean packing extra snacks, knowing I’ll be out longer than usual. Or bringing gym shoes in my car because I’ll be near a walking trail after my kid’s practice. These aren’t huge changes, but they make all the difference.
You don’t need to guess everything right away. The first few times you try this, it might feel clunky. But the more you do it, the more intuitive it becomes. You start to notice the patterns in your week and can plan around the disruptions that used to throw you off.
Everything in this process comes down to choices. The better you can prepare, the more likely you are to make choices that support your goals. And when a day doesn’t go as planned? You make the best choice you can in that moment, move on, and get back to your routine the next day.
This is why I love tools like tracking with MyFitnessPal, carrying water and snacks in my bag, and having simple workouts I can do anywhere. I don’t rely on perfection. I rely on preparation.
