Why You Do Not Need to Silence Every Food Thought
Having emotions around food is normal.
Somewhere along the way, the conversation around food noise shifted from awareness into suppression. Now many people feel like if they think about food, enjoy food, or feel emotionally connected to food in any way, something must be wrong.
I do not think this is the best lifelong approach.
Food has always been connected to emotion, memories, celebration, comfort and satisfaction. That does not automatically mean you have an unhealthy relationship with it. The problem is not having thoughts and feelings around food. The problem is when guilt, shame, extremes and all-or-nothing thinking completely take over your life.
I understand why people want relief from obsessive thoughts around food. I understand why the idea of “quieting the noise” feels appealing. But I do not think the long-term goal should be becoming emotionally numb around eating.
You deserve to enjoy food.
You deserve to feel satisfied.
You deserve to live your life without constantly fighting yourself.
The goal is not removing all thoughts and feelings around food. The goal is calming your mind and being able to enjoy your lifestyle for decades.
