What If Food Is How You Cope With the Unknown?

Sometimes the food may not be the beginning of the story.

You feel uncertain about something. You do not know what is coming next. That uncertainty turns into anxiety, uneasiness, guilt, or some other emotion you would rather not sit with.

Then you eat.

And sometimes eating works.

That is the part I think gets lost when emotional eating is automatically treated like a problem. Food can be comforting. Choosing it once, or even choosing it regularly at different points in your life, does not mean it has to remain your only response forever.

Maybe the goal is not to remove food from the toolbox. Maybe it is to keep adding tools.

Over time, another option might become taking a walk, talking to someone, journaling, sitting with the feeling, or reminding yourself that not knowing what happens next does not mean you will not be able to handle it.

And sometimes you may still choose the food.

What changes when uncertainty stops meaning, “I do not know what is going to happen and I do not know how I will handle it,” and starts becoming, “I do not know what is going to happen, but I trust myself to figure it out”?
