Hey there. We all feel like we’re slacking sometimes. Every single one of us. The trick isn’t to avoid that feeling—it’s about how long you stay in it before you step back and assess what’s actually happening.
It’s easy to fall into the “I should be doing more” mindset. You might feel like you’re just going through the motions, not pushing yourself enough, or not making the progress you expected. But before you start beating yourself up, take a step back and ask yourself—am I really slacking, or am I just being too hard on myself?
Take a Step Back and Look at the Bigger Picture
When you feel like you’re not doing enough, stop and evaluate. Look at the things you are doing. Whether it’s your workouts, your nutrition, your personal goals, or any habit you’re working on—chances are, you’re doing better than you think.
We tend to be our own toughest critics. We hold ourselves to standards that we wouldn’t expect from anyone else. But when you objectively look at your actions, you might realize you’re not slacking at all.
Stop Dwelling on the Past
Let’s say you have been slacking. Maybe you missed a workout or didn’t follow through on something you planned. The worst thing you can do is dwell on it. You can’t go back and change the past. What you can do is recognize it, decide what needs to change, and take action moving forward.
Instead of spiraling into guilt or frustration, ask yourself:
Am I actually slacking, or am I just being hard on myself?
If I am slacking, what’s one small thing I can do right now to get back on track?
How can I adjust my mindset so that I don’t keep repeating this cycle?
Then, most importantly—execute. Do the thing.
My Own Slacking Moment This Week
I had this exact moment recently. I had a busy few days and hadn’t put out a podcast episode. When I realized it, I started to feel like I wasn’t doing enough. But then I checked my notes and saw that my last episode wasn’t that long ago. Sure, I could have been more consistent, but I wasn’t falling off completely.
So instead of beating myself up about it, I took action—I recorded an episode. That’s the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.
Final Thoughts
We all have moments where we check out, where things don’t go as planned, or where we feel like we’re slacking. It happens. But the key is to recognize it, decide what you need to do, and take action.
