When Food Noise Gets Louder Again After Weight Loss Medication
What Happens When Food Noise Comes Back After a GLP-1?
If you have experienced a significant reduction in food noise while taking a GLP-1, having those thoughts and feelings return could be unsettling. Maybe you have spent months barely thinking about food. Maybe you lost weight during that time after struggling to do so for years. Then suddenly you notice yourself thinking about food more often again. I can understand why your first reaction might be nervousness, frustration, or even panic.
I also think the way we talk about food noise can make that reaction stronger.
Food noise has increasingly been positioned as a villain. If the message is that these thoughts are bad and getting rid of them is good, their return can feel like something has gone wrong.
But what if we looked at them differently?
Food noise is still made up of thoughts and feelings around food.
You have thoughts and feelings about hundreds of things. Some are useful. Some are not. Some deserve your attention. Others pass through without needing a response.
Why would thoughts about food have to be completely different?
This is where I think there can be an interesting connection with intuition.
If your food thoughts have been dramatically quieter for an extended period, you now have contrast. You know what the absence of those thoughts feels like.
So as they return, you have an opportunity to observe them almost from a new starting point.
What am I actually thinking?
What am I feeling?
What might this be telling me?
Do I want to respond to this thought the way I did before?
The goal does not have to be blindly trusting every thought. It can be learning how to interpret them.
That takes practice. It also takes patience and compassion because old responses are probably going to show up alongside whatever new relationship you are trying to build.
If your immediate reaction is, “Food noise is back, this is bad,” try asking yourself one question.
Is there another way I could look at this?
And if you cannot think of one, take it all the way to the opposite perspective.
What if having these thoughts again could be useful?
What could they teach you about hunger, satisfaction, emotion, routine, preference, or the relationship you want with food moving forward?
Food noise returning does not automatically mean you are going backward.
It may be giving you an opportunity to hear those thoughts again and decide what you want to do with them this time.
