Why You Are Not Starting Over When Food Noise Returns
When food noise starts getting louder again, one of the biggest fears I hear is not simply, “What if this gets harder?” The fear is much bigger than that. It is, “What if I go all the way back to where I started?” One habit slips, then another, then another, and suddenly the mind jumps all the way to the worst possible outcome. I understand why that fear feels real, especially if your starting point involved feeling like you had very little control around food.
But you are not at that starting point anymore.
You have reinforcement now.
Think about all the times you made a choice around food that you were happy with.
Think about all the times you wanted to do one thing and deliberately chose another.
Think about all the times life got busy and you still figured something out.
Think about all the times you became hypercritical of yourself, noticed it, and eventually pulled yourself out of it.
Those experiences matter.
I do not necessarily call them proof.
I think the proof is the decision to trust yourself.
The reinforcement is everything that happened after that decision.
Progress is not only the result. It is every decision you made to get there.
That is why I think the fear of going back to square one can discount a huge part of your progress.
You may experience the same thoughts you used to have.
You may feel the same pull toward certain foods.
You may have periods where you eat differently than you planned.
But you now have more awareness and more experience.
You know more about how you respond.
You know more about the environment around you.
That includes understanding the food itself.
Packaged food is designed to taste good. Marketing is designed to remind you how much you enjoy it. None of that means you lack willpower.
When you understand that, you can create parameters instead of making everything an absolute.
Maybe you buy individual portions.
Maybe you put the amount you want into a bowl and put the rest away.
Maybe you create a little friction between the first serving and the next one.
You can support yourself without banning the food.
The same thing applies if medication has been dampening your food noise and the dosage changes.
If more thoughts and feelings start coming back, that does not mean you failed.
It means the environment changed.
You may need time to adjust.
You may need to build different routines around hunger, meals, and food cues.
You do not have to figure all of that out immediately.
Give yourself time.
You are not racing back toward your old life unless you repeatedly choose that direction.
And even if you have been moving in a direction you do not like for a while, the next choice is still available.
Life keeps moving forward, and so can you.
You do not need to erase the past.
You do not need to pretend the fear is not there.
Respect the emotion.
Learn from the experience.
Then decide what you want to reinforce next.
You are not starting over.
You are continuing from where you are now, with more experience than you had before.
