Deciding to Love Yourself from the Inside Out
Hey there. You ever feel like loving yourself is a concept that sounds good in theory, but when it comes to actually doing it, you hesitate? You’re not alone. For a lot of us, especially when we’re on a weight loss journey or trying to “better” ourselves, it feels like loving who we are right now is the exact opposite of what we should be doing. But what if I told you that loving yourself isn’t just a feel-good idea, it’s the foundation for real change?
I want you to try something. Make the decision right now, to love yourself. Even if that decision only sticks for ten seconds before doubt creeps back in, it’s a start. That moment of self-love, even if it feels forced, plants a seed. Every time you repeat that decision, you reinforce the idea that you’re worth it. And over time, those little moments build into something real.
You’ve probably heard the quote before: “All the work you do on the outside doesn’t mean anything if you’re not working on what’s inside.” It hits deep because it’s true. Weight loss, dieting, even that drive to jump into fitness—it’s often just a symptom of how we feel about ourselves. The tough part is admitting that. I don’t know your specific thoughts or feelings, but you do. And that’s what matters.
How you see yourself shapes everything. The way you feel about your body, your mindset around food, and how you view exercise—it all ties back to your inner relationship with yourself. You might think, “But I don’t love myself yet.” That’s okay. Self-love is a process, but you have to start somewhere. Sometimes, that starting point is just saying the words, even if you don’t believe them yet.
Think about it. You hear your own voice more than anyone else’s. When you’re tearing yourself down, who’s doing it? You are. And often, those negative thoughts echo things other people might have said in the past. But here’s the good news, you also have the power to change that narrative.
So, what does it actually look like to love yourself from the inside out? It starts with making a declaration. Look at who you are. Flaws, strengths, quirks, all of it and decide to love that person. Not just your appearance, but your thoughts, your opinions, and how you’ve grown over the years. Think about how your beliefs have evolved over the last five, ten, or twenty years. That growth deserves recognition.
Of course, reinforcing this mindset doesn’t happen overnight. It takes consistent action. That’s where the six minimum daily actions come in. These small steps help build a stronger connection with yourself and turn self-love into something real.
One Minute of Positive Self-Statements: Stand in front of the mirror and speak kindly to yourself. Tell yourself things you need to hear. At first, it might feel awkward, but over time, those words start to feel genuine.
Journaling for Five Minutes: Write down your thoughts and feelings. If you’re stuck, ask yourself, “What am I thinking?” or “Why do I feel this way?” You’ll be surprised how much clarity comes from just five minutes of reflection.
Spending Time Outdoors for Five Minutes: Disconnect from technology and just be present for five minutes. Sit, walk, breathe—use that time to connect with your thoughts.
Practicing Creativity for Five Minutes: Express yourself through whatever creative outlet feels right for you. Painting, writing, music, or even just doodling—it’s about getting your thoughts and feelings out into the world.
Being Active for Thirty Minutes: This doesn’t have to be intense. Just move. Go for a walk, stretch, or do any activity that feels good for your body.
Adding One Thing, to One Meal: Instead of cutting foods out, focus on adding something positive—like a serving of fruits or vegetables or an extra glass of water. Small additions can create a huge mindset shift over time.
This inside/out process isn’t about distractions. It’s about connection, real, deep connection with who you are at every level. Yes, fitness and nutrition matter, but they should support your journey of self-love, not distract from it.
So, where are you right now? Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Can you accept where you are without judgment? Can you appreciate the lessons life has taught you so far? Starting from acceptance doesn’t mean you’re giving up, it means you’re ready to build from a solid, honest foundation.
