December Goals: Healing, Mobility, and Functional Strength

As we head into December and the final stretch of 2024, I’m focusing on consistency and sustainability in my fitness process. November marked another month of doing at least 70 workouts…I finished with 76. Many of those were dedicated to stretching and addressing ongoing issues with my foot and ankle. Living with CP (cerebral palsy) has always required a delicate balance between pushing my limits and knowing when to step back. I’m learning to adapt my approach to prioritize long-term health.

For December, my focus is on functional workouts, mobility, and healing. Using a walker to alleviate foot pressure has highlighted how quickly strength and mobility can decline without consistent effort. It’s the “use it or lose it” principle amplified, and my challenge is maintaining strength while respecting my body’s limitations. This means shifting to upper-body workouts, seated exercises, and a variety of functional movements categorized on my Apple Watch.

I’ve also had to adjust my nutrition and overall approach. With a lower daily calorie burn, my eating habits need to align with these changes. It’s another reminder of how interconnected every aspect of health is—what you do, what you eat, and how you recover all contribute to your progress.

The biggest takeaway for me this month is the importance of setting myself up for the long run. Yes, I have immediate goals for December, but they’re part of a bigger plan for the next six months and beyond. This isn’t about finishing strong or waiting for January; it’s about building a sustainable foundation now.
